The Call to Global Action      October 2026

Dear GAGV,

It is always such a pleasure to write to you — primarily because your support makes all of our progress possible! We are grateful.

Thanks to all who joined us on the webinar and asked such great questions about our recently released report: U.S. Gun Policy, Global Harm: Cross-Border Gun Trafficking from the Great Lakes Region. If you missed the webinar, you can go to highlights of the session below.

We had an important victory last month in our lawsuit with the Mexican Government against Arizona gun dealers and we also spoke out against a highly dangerous proposed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) rule on online gun sales. Read on!

Sincerely,

Jon Lowy
Founder & President

P.S. You help us stop crime guns and save lives through pioneering litigation, human rights advocacy, and global research. Donate now to help Global Action on Gun Violence keep fighting on every front!

GAGV Wins Critical Discovery Victory in Lawsuit Against Arizona Gun Dealers

GAGV won an important discovery victory last month on behalf of Mexico in its lawsuit, Estados Unidos Mexicanos v. Diamondback Shooting Sports, Inc., et al., against five Arizona gun dealers. The federal court rejected the defendant’s demand that Mexico either pay more than $200,000 to digitize the records that it intended to transfer to the ATF or give up its attempt to obtain those records in discovery.

The Court held that Diamondback must preserve the key firearms sales records and criticized the dealer’s tactics as “extortionate” while granting Mexico’s Emergency Motion to Preserve Evidence. This ruling ensures that evidence remains available as GAGV and Mexico move forward with the case.

Gun trafficking is one of the world’s greatest threats to public safety, and the United States is the most prolific source of gun trafficking.

Our new report takes a close look at a critical trafficking corridor: the Great Lakes region to Canada.

The report confirms that overwhelming majorities of crime guns in Canada as well as the Caribbean flow directly to straw buyers and traffickers from U.S. gun shops, many from this region, because of reckless gun industry practices enabled by weak U.S. laws.

Of the states in the Great Lakes region, Ohio’s weak gun laws, large firearms market, permissive private-sale, limited dealer oversight, industry protections, and restrictions on local regulation contribute to it being leading source of crime guns to Canada and the fourth leading source state of crime guns in the Caribbean. Michigan is the 5th largest supplier of crime guns.

To maximize the impact of this critical information, GAGV has reached out to discuss the report with policymakers in the U.S. and Canada, law enforcement, and media, and we have received encouraging feedback. GAGV is committed to stopping this crime gun pipeline at the most effective point — the gun industry source.

GAGV Joins Manny Oliver at People’s Theatre in New York Following GUAC

GAGV’s Senior Counsel Jake Steisel joined Manny Oliver and moderator, Angela Fernandez, Executive Director of Lawyers Alliance for New York, for a talk-back last month following GUAC, a dynamic one-man play about Manny’s undying love for his son, Joaquin "Guac" Oliver, who was killed in the 2018 Parkland school shooting. Jake and Manny discussed GAGV's "Lawsuit for Survival.” This landmark case, Joaquin Oliver v. USA, asks the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to establish the responsibility of the United States to protect the right to live free from gunfire by implementing strong gun policies.

GAGV Speaks Out Against Alarming Proposed Administration Rule to Allow Remote Gun Sales

Screenshot%202026-10-07%20at%209_21_49_PM.png

The ATF has proposed a dangerous rule that would let gun dealers sell many guns over the Internet, which would eliminate the ability of dealers to screen for high-risk sales. Eligible buyers could verify their identities online and have a gun shipped directly to their home without any in-person interaction. Currently, someone ordering a gun online must go to a licensed gun dealer to prove their identity and undergo a background check.

In a Mother Jones article, Jon highlighted that the proposal to allow online sales is “probably the most dangerous action taken by the US government to increase gun violence.” Jon went on to warn that “A brief video interaction cannot detect if the purchaser is actually an illegal straw purchaser buying for someone else, a gun trafficker just supplying the criminal market, somebody who’s intoxicated, somebody who is on drugs, someone who is clearly mentally unstable and dangerous. I really was shocked.”

GAGV's Jake Steisel Warns about Huge Arms Trafficking Problem on Prominent Policy Podcast

GAGV Senior Counsel Jake Steisel recently joined the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ flagship podcast, 35 West, for an in-depth conversation on gun trafficking and its human and diplomatic consequences.

Jake spoke about the staggering scale of arms trafficking from the United States to Mexico, where between 70 and 90 percent of crime guns are U.S.-sourced. He discussed how this flow of weapons fuels cartel violence, drives migration and instability, and poisons the U.S.–Mexico relationship at a moment when cooperation between the two countries has never been more important.

He also addressed the ongoing GAGV-led litigation against the Arizona gun dealers who supply the Iron Pipeline — including the recent terrorism charges against the owner of Grips by Larry — and how these cases fit into a broader strategy of legal accountability that complements Mexico’s landmark lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers.

Jake’s appearance on 35 West, the premier English-language podcast on Western Hemisphere policy, reflects the growing recognition of GAGV as the “go-to” to discuss the U.S. gun industry’s role in gun trafficking and its effect on the world.
