I want to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of encouragement following my appearance on 60 MINUTES and as we prepare to defend our Mexico v. Smith & Wesson victory in the U.S. Supreme Court.
Suffice it to say, Global Action on Gun Violence hit the ground running in the new year. On January 10, we filed Mexico’s brief in the Supreme Court in the first gun industry liability case the Court has heard. And we are looking forward to a terrific event on February 6 in Washington, DC. Read on!
Sincerely, Jon Lowy Founder & President

The U.S. Supreme Court Will Hear the Mexico Case This March
The gun industry puts profits over people’s lives, flooding U.S. streets and the world with crime guns.
Now GAGV is fighting to hold the gun industry accountable in the highest court of the land in the case, Estados Unidos Mexicanos v. Smith & Wesson, et al.
The case alleges that the gun industry has recklessly and unlawfully sold, distributed, and marketed guns that supply the criminal market in Mexico.
After the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit held that the case was not barred by the federal gun industry protection law, PLCAA, the Supreme Court took the case.
The Court is reviewing questions of proximate causation and aiding and abetting.

In Mexico’s brief, we state that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act “provides no protection for businesses engaged in unlawful commerce in arms.” The brief then details the many ways in which the gun industry has engaged in unlawful business and, therefore, aids and abets criminals.
We are now preparing for the oral argument – set for March 4 – with our legal partner, Hogan Lovells. You can read the brief here.
If you live in the Washington, DC, area —or want to make the trip — please join us for a fun and inspiring night of theater on Thursday, February 6 at Woolly Mammoth Theatre. And please tell your friends and family about it! Or buy them tickets as a present.
Just off its successful run in New York City at The Public, Guac, is a one-man tour-de-force theatrical experience about Manny Oliver, a father turned gun violence prevention activist. Manny’s son, Joaquin “Guac” Oliver, was murdered in the Parkland, FL, school shooting in 2018.
Fearless, funny, and pulling zero punches, it’s a story of an immigrant family in search of the American dream only to be confronted by a uniquely American nightmare instead.
After the performance, GAGV invites you to a reception with food and drink in the theater lobby, where you will meet Manny and his wife, Patricia, and hear more about our upcoming Supreme Court case with Mexico.
Watch “The Iron River" with Jon Lowy on 60 MINUTES
The recent 60 MINUTES piece lays bare the fact that guns from the U.S. fuel cartel violence in Mexico.
GAGV’s Jon Lowy was interviewed extensively for the segment, pointing out that “if you think fentanyl overdoses are a problem, if you think migration across the borders are a problem, if you think the spread of organized crime is a problem in the United States, then you should care about stopping the crime gun pipeline to Mexico and you need to stop it at its source.”
That is why the Government of Mexico with GAGV as its co-counsel took the unprecedented step of suing Smith & Wesson and other manufacturers in the case that is now headed to the Supreme Court.
