Help us make it happen

Dear GAGV,

For too long the gun industry has hidden behind its undeserved, unjust shield law, raking in money and leaving death and destruction in its path.

But that shield—known as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA)—could soon crumble. Please donate to Global Action on Gun Violence today. It’s in sight. Help us make it happen.

Next Tuesday, I argue in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania on behalf of the parents of J.R. Gustafson, who was killed at the age of 13 when another boy shot him because he thought the gun was unloaded since the magazine was removed.

The suit alleges that the gun was defective for failing to include safety features that would have prevented the shooting.

But PLCAA kept getting in the way of justice for the Gustafsons, as it has for countless other victims—until the Superior Court of Pennsylvania agreed with us that they have a right to their day in court. It was the first appeals court that has ruled PLCAA is unconstitutional

Next week, I will be defending that ruling in Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court. If the Court agrees that the law is unconstitutional, it will be a tremendous victory in our fight to hold the gun industry accountable.

But it means there will still be a huge amount of legal work ahead. The case could then be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court or we get to go to trial to prove our case for the Gustafsons. That’s why I need you with us now.

What’s truly exciting is that we’re making progress, which has been so incredibly hard for so long to do in the fight to end gun violence.

Just recently, two other lawsuits on behalf of Mexico that Global Action on Gun Violence is leading are moving ahead. The arguments we’ve made against gun manufacturers and gun dealers that PLCAA should not apply have been successful!

But without GAGV’s innovative legal work these efforts could stall. I ask that you give today.

Together, we can keep making progress. We’re taking on the gun industry and winning! Help us keep this momentum going by making a donation today.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Lowy

P.S. I’ll send you a link to listen to the argument in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court later. But right now click here to give a generous gift to Global Action on Gun Violence. Thank you!
